The tenets of Turbulence: a mechanistic view.

Atila PantaleĆ£o Silva Freire
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL

Abstract: The lecture discusses the historical development of different schools for the treatment of turbulent flows. One of them, in particular, has shown a clear advantage on simulating engineering flows. Other approaches have striven on identifying the structural aspects of complex flows and on determinism. Despite the dominant role of the existing movements, it is argued that even very complex problems can be adequately addressed through simple mechanistic models, with much embodied physics and capacity to run on real time.
